University College London (UCL)
“Ford Motor Company is proud to support this academy. Our employees are trying to provide students with an opportunity to work on real engineering projects to give them a taste of what they will be faced with if they choose to enter the industry. Our engineers have been mentoring students, have monitored their progress through regular visits and have been on hand to answer any of their questions and support them whenever they have run into difficulties.
The UK will need more than a million new engineers and technicians over the next five years. As our partnership develops we hope to create more opportunities to encourage new talent into the industry.”

Ford Visit - Oil Level Indicator Challenge and the Ford Mustang
Our year 10 students enjoyed a visit from one of our sponsors, Ford Motors, and took part in The Oil Level Indicator Challenge. They worked on designing and modelling an oil level indicator handle using 2D and 3D sketches/CAD technology. Read more here.
UCL Pearl Seating Project
The Year 12 Engineering students met with Professor Nick Tyler from UCL PEARL and Mr Fraser Donaldson from Showcase Interiors to discuss the next stages of their seating design projects. The students received some excellent guidance that will enable them to complete their development work and prepare for their final presentations. Read more here.
Elutec and UCL Pearl Seating Project Presentations
Year 12 Engineering students proudly presented their seating designs for the UCL PEARL building to judges in a “Dragons Den” style format. The board of judges – Professor Nick Tyler from UCL, Mr Fraser Donaldson from Showcase Interiors, Ms Donovan – Elutec Academy Principal and Mr Edwards – Elutec Academy Business Manager put the students through some tough questioning about their designs. “Thanks for inviting me to be a part of this event. I am very happy that PEARL has been able to be such an inspiration to the students, as evidenced by their presentations, ideas and creativity. I think the students rose magnificently to the challenge of creating something extraordinary in response to being asked for something ordinary - a bench - and it shows the calibre of students at Elutec and the teaching that encourages them to be so creative.
All groups had good ideas and showed evidence of teamwork. The three we selected to go forward represented, in addition, examples of exceptional and original thinking, in terms of the conceptual design, the manufacturing issues involved and the aesthetics needed in such a product. Well done to all.”
