Why do a product design course?
Product Design focuses on creative & sustainable design of all types and aspects of manufactured products. This will include an understanding of manufacture, materials, production, sustainability, ergonomics, design features and meeting the needs of the consumer. This qualification is intended to provide all learners with the academic knowledge and understanding required to progress onto a university degree, a higher apprenticeship (level 4) or full time employment within the engineering, manufacturing, technology or creative sectors.
Entry requirements
Students wishing to undertake product design must have a minimum of five GCSEs grades A*–C, including English in addition to a B grade in a technical or creative subject that may include the following; art, science, design & technology, product design, engineering, associated BTEC First Diploma or equivalent level 2 qualification.
This is a two-year linear course consisting of, 50% - Design and Make Project and 50% - Examination.
Course structure
Year 1
- 2 internally assessed design and make projects with supporting folio evidence, linked to areas of knowledge and understanding required in the specification, with a focus on theory and process within design.
Year 2
- 1 Internally assessed and AQA moderated Design and Make Project, delivering a working Prototype + Supporting portfolio of evidence.
- Examination – Paper 1 - 2.5 hours short and extended response questions, Paper 2 – 1.5 hours’ theory and analysis.
