Elutec @UCL Dyson Workshop

Elutec teamed with the Dyson Foundation and the UCL Faculty of Engineering to bring a series of hands-on design, engineering and technology workshops. Elutec @UCL James Dyson Foundation Young Designer’s Challenge Workshop was the first workshop, particularly created for year 9 students who enjoy making things, designing products and solving problems.

We would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr Elpida Makrygianni, Engineering Education Developer & Coordinator, and Dr Paul Greening, Director of the Centre for Engineering Education at UCL, one of our main sponsors, and Danya Walker, Executive Director at James Dyson Foundation, for organising such a great experience for students.

We were fully booked very quickly, being able to accommodate only 40 the most gifted and talented students from the area. During the day students were divided into the teams. Eight teams were challenged to achieve Young Designer’s Award. Our judges found it very difficult to choose only one team. The decision was made to award everyone with James Dyson Workshop Certificates and Elutec, UCL and James Dyson Foundation prizes.

We would like to share with eight team innovations:

Team 1 created ‘Super Tab’ – to clean dishes, this is a high pressure tap, with no chemicals and how our future engineers calculated this new product would be cheaper than a traditional dish washing machines.

Team 2 invented ‘Hugo the Bin’ – uses air power to pull rubbish into the bin.

Team 3 designed ‘Smart Tap’ – everything in one tap: soap, water and air.

Team 4 created ‘Sushi Sock’ – solar powered socks dryer.

Team 5 designed ‘Super Bin’ – this team tried to solve the problem that human beings will not be any longer to take bins out. This team invented that vacuum would suck up rubbish.

Team 6 invented ‘Mask Charge 600 +’ which will solve the problem with a dead phone and found a solution a portable charger.

Team 7 - ‘Air Condenser 3000’ this new product could reuse hot air and consumer will not have any longer problems with steamy bathroom , because this equipment will be able to turn vapour into water.

Team 8 – ‘Multi-Purpose Air Gun’ this equipment will be use pressurised air with lots of settings to creased clothes and dusty areas.

We would like to wish all the best to our future engineers or product designers.
